'Life Events on a timeline'
My parents, Keshav and Yashoda Puthran are originally from Mangalore, a beautiful coastal village in South India. I was born and brought up in Mumbai, and hence picked up the local dialect Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati and little bit of Malayalam. I speak Tulu.
The best achievement as a 5yr. old that I remember, that in first standard (Chembur Karnataka School) was getting a 1st prize for cursive Handwriting. I still remember the prize - A story book 'Dick the Duckling'.
Childhood Memories
Year 1971, our family shifted to Ghatkopar, where we still continue to stay. This place has lot of memories of my childhood to adulthood and beyond.
This was my first taste of freedom. Bunking college, watching all Amitabh Bachchan movies and exploring science through Physics, Botany, Zoology and finally majoring in Microbiology. This was also a transforming stage in my life. Thanks to my teacher and mentor Mrs Shailaja Girishankar, who brought out the artistic qualities and confidence in me. Whatever I am today, its because of her.
From Microbiology to Art, my turning point in life I fully owe to Srikrishna Sir, my Guru. Stepping foot into Rajaram Classes in those early learning days in 1983, was a total bliss. Each day was progressive by learning great tools and techniques with equally inspiring friends.
My first sketch of Goddess Laxmi, an Indian Goddess of Money and Prosperity laid my foundation on August 15th, 1983, in the art field.
In 1986, I graduated in Microbiology and appeared for the stringent entrance exam and interview at Sir J J Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai. I got through in first attempt. My portfolio and learning at Rajaram classes worked.
This was the phase where I had to earn myself and learn for 5 years in JJIAA. It was a period of struggle and striving to better myself. With great teachers and fellow artists, I learnt the necessary skills of Art and Communication. I love painting on-the-spot portraits and landscapes and loved using different media and on varied surfaces. Finally I graduated as a Commercial Artist in Advertising
Students from Basics were trained under a 1 year foundation course. These students today have become professionals in various fields of art.
Shilpanjali, 1995 issue of Sir J J Institute of Applied Art, featured this article on Paperless Portfolio which I had conceived as an insight, in 1993 about the incoming paradigm shift, that was bringing a change for the creative community, in the digital space.
This article captures the essence and attitude for artists, that can be reflected and relevant even today.
The challenge is to develop and retain strong traditional skills along with a logical blend and understanding of digital, for the future of artist community and longevity.
Created a buzz with workshops, events, celebrations to bring back the Alumni for a reunion. This marked the phase of working with current and past students and connecting them to the Industry. The celebrations included the Wall Painting project, Grooming workshops, Get Togethers, Annuals and Competitions.
